This card is often talked about as the card of the apprentice. New skills must be learned so that you can reap the benefits later on. It often shows up in a reading when the querent has had to change jobs in mid-life and begin a new career. Crowley calls this card Prudence. I believe the attribute is Sun in Virgo and Virgoan qualities include prudence and attention to detail. On the Thoth card there is a flowering tree, firmly rooted, still growing. The leaves curl around the flowers, protecting them. Waite wanted this young man to be the apprentice to the stone worker in the 3 of Pentacles (Robert M Place – The Tarot – History, Symbolism, and Divination). You can see though that the young man in the 8 is a production worker. He is making money by keeping his nose to the grindstone. There is no sense of the artist here, only the routine of earning a living. Perhaps this card reversed indicates impatience, especially with mind numbing repetitive chores. I have the Sun in Virgo and I am definitely impatient with boring tasks and being made to sit still and focus on things I have no interest in.

Title: Lord of Prudence
Element: Earth
Zodiac Sign: Virgo
Decan: Sun in Virgo; August 23 – September 1
Thumbnail Meaning: Patience, calculation, caution.

The Eight of Pentacles is a card of skill. Hard work, patience, perseverance, attention to detail–all are shown simply in the picture at right. Little worth doing is easy, or quick.

As the “Lord of Prudence,” this card recalls the Temperance card from the major arcana. Instead of chasing get-rich-quick schemes, the young man works diligently in his workshop.

He is far from the town, and absorbed in his work. Compare him to the gabby braggarts who pontificate about “my next novel” but never seem to come up with even a chapter. When this youth finishes his work, he will have something to show for it.

This is a card of the Golden Mean. Having a work ethic does not mean that you work until you collapse, or that you sit around and wait for inspiration. Prudence means neither working too hard or too little, but going at a pace that will ensure the job gets done, and expending the right amount of effort for the job, whether it’s making pentacles, painting pictures or slinging hash.

Compare this card to the Eight of Cups, “Lord of Abandoned Success,” which comes after two cycles of abundance, luxury and disappointment. While the Eight of Cups shows the emptiness of pleasure, this card shows the joys of work.
