When I first started doing tarot all the book I read made a big deal out of choosing a significator. I never could make up my mind between the queen of swords and the queen of wands. I still vassilate between identifying with one or the other.

My usual method (although I do vary it at times) is to firstly do a general reading using the Celtic Cross spread. For questions that follow, I choose a significator card based upon their Sun sign (or sometimes based upon the question). I then put the significator card back in the deck, get the client to shuffle, and take the three cards either side of it to do a seven-card spread.

I have heard the pros and cons about significator cards too. I chose at this point not to use them. This is not to say I may find use in the future to use them. I try to keep my mind open to all possibilities.

I have always let the cards choose Significantor, even if it came up Minor Arcana, instead of Major. I have always found that my readings were better this way, personally.

Also, I have always done intuitive readings, impressionistic readings, if you will. Other than a basic Celtic cross pattern, and the implications of the layout, I do not read a book to interpret them.

For me, I have always found this more accurate.

I dont use significators because I get confused re these and don’t know which cards to use. Depending on what book I read, certain cards represent astrology signs and other books recommend different cards for this symbolism.
