Thoth Tarot Deck Review

By insightful | Tarot Deck Reviews

Tarot and Oracle reviews have put out this really in-depth review on the thoth tarot by Aleister Crowley. The reviewer goes into detail about the cards themselves but also recommends the book ” understanding Aleister  Crowley’s Thoth tarot” by Duquette. This deck does come with a 40 page little white book but the before mentioned book will give you more in-depth detail. It also goes into more detail about the background of how the deck came about, and also more about the artwork contained within the cards. Also something that is a little different about this deck compared to others is that it also associates the tarot cards with astrological symbols. So another best bet would be to go out and get an astrology book to learn more about the symbols that are on the cards.

The rest of the video the author shows you the beautiful cards from the tarot deck itself. Take a look for yourself at these cards.

This deck along with the Rider Waite-Smith comprise the two major divisions of modern Tarot card styles. There are numerous significant differences between the Thoth deck and the RWS deck. Not the least of which is the famous “Tzaddi is not The Star” from the Thelemic “Liber AL vel Legis” (The Book of The Law), delivered to The Prophet by a præter-human intelligence. Not only is the Hebrew attribution of The Star different, the numbering and name of Strength have changed along with several other name changes.

After the changes to the Major Arcana, the next biggest change is in the ordering and names of the Court Cards. In the Thoth deck and its derivatives, the Courts are Princess, Prince, Queen and Knight.

The Thoth deck is a “must-have” for serious Tarotist. Even if you don’t read with or meditate on this deck, its place in the development of modern decks is too important for you to be unfamiliar with it.

The images of the Thoth deck are unique and unusual, and stray from the traditional decks like the Rider/Waite. They do hold beauty as well.

I am learning on the Thoth Deck and have a copy of Crowley’s Book of Thoth. Besides the symbolism being so varied and accurate, I also like the artwork of the Thoth Deck more than any other. The card that stands for me the most is the Princess of Wands or the Earthy part of Fire to those who don’t understand the differences in the Court Cards.

I also love the Thoth decks depiction of the snake in the form of the infinity symbol with the yin/yang symbols enclosed. Change and infinity combined.

In some editions of Aleister Crowley’s Thoth deck are included three versions of The Magus, the idea being that you yourself would choose 1 for readings. Like how the Golden Dawn Magical Tarot has 2 temperance cards.

My personal opinion is that decks like Golden Dawn, Thoth, and similar decks are superior because of the information contained on the card. Also, I think the Book of Thoth court card descriptions are fantastic and worth very deep reflection.

I use the Thoth Tarot too. I have some smaller simpler spreads that I use with them that are different than the little white book spread.

Looks like it would be hard to read for a beginner like me. Do all the cards have label like in those few saying luxury for 4 of cups and failure for the pentacles/disks? It’s intriguing to say the least.
